Protect Personal Information

Some information should never enter a chat with someone you just met, no matter how well the conversation is going: passwords, banking information, identity documents, your exact home address and any private access codes. There is no legitimate reason a chat partner needs any of these — someone who asks is either careless or working an angle, and neither deserves the benefit of the doubt. Keep identifying details vague early on. Your first name and your city are plenty; your street and your employer are not conversation material with a stranger.

Control What Appears on Camera

Before you start a session, spend ten seconds looking at what the camera sees. Check the background: remove mail, documents and photos that reveal your address, your full name or the people in your life. Envelopes on a desk, a diploma on a wall, a package label in frame — each is a small leak, and small leaks add up. A plain wall or a tidy corner tells the other person nothing you did not choose to tell them. This one habit does more for your privacy than any setting.

End Uncomfortable Conversations

If a conversation turns uncomfortable — pushy questions, boundary testing, a mood that just feels off — end it. You owe no explanation. Not a polite excuse, not a reason, not a goodbye if you do not feel like giving one. The single tap that closes a session is a complete sentence. People who respect you will never make you need it; people who make you need it have answered the only question that mattered.

Watch for Payment Requests

Never send money to someone you met in a video chat — not cash transfers, not gift cards, not crypto. The stories vary (an emergency, a stranded relative, a can't-miss investment, a fee to keep talking) but the pattern is always the same: manufactured urgency pointed at your wallet. The correct response does not vary either: refuse, end the conversation and report the account. A real connection never has a price attached to its next chapter.

Avoid Suspicious Links

Treat any link or file from a chat partner with suspicion. Do not download unknown files, and do not follow links that promise to continue the conversation somewhere else, verify your identity or show you photos. Off-platform links are how people are steered toward phishing pages and malware — away from the moderation tools that protect you here. If someone insists a link is harmless, that insistence is itself the warning.

Report Serious Behavior

Blocking removes someone from your experience; reporting protects everyone after you. Use the reporting tools whenever you encounter threats, scam attempts, harassment or anything that violates our community guidelines. Reports are reviewed and acted on — and no, reporting is not an overreaction. The report button exists precisely for the moments you hesitate to use it.
